How can I prepare for my first acupuncture appointment?

First off, if you are new to acupuncture, welcome!

We encourage you to drink 20-30 ounces of water the morning of your first appointment. Acupuncture gently detoxes the body so hydration is key to a successful, lasting treatment.

Please bring any recent labs or health documents that may assist us in capturing the full picture of your health.

Finally, complete the health history form (located at the top), bring this in to your appointment and we’ll guide you on the rest.

What is Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture?

Documented as being well over 6,000 years old, Chinese Medicine is an eight branch system of health that includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, qigong exercises, massage/bodywork, nutritional therapy, meditation, feng shui and moxibustion (aka moxa).

During a treatment thin, sterile acupuncture needles are gently inserted into acupuncture points on the body with the purpose of bringing the body’s innate healing system back into balance, and restoring health for mind, body, and emotion.

What can acupuncture and treat?

Acupuncture factors in all levels of health; body, mind and emotion. All treatments begin with the foundation of calming the nervous system since daily and chronic stress can wreak havoc on your health.

We specialize in treating pain conditions, fertility struggles, menopausal transitions, chronic stress and much more. Check out the What We Treat page for more information.

Does acupuncture hurt or will I feel the needles?

Most of the acupuncture points will be inserted without much sensation, while others may have a little pinch to them. There is no pain once the acupuncture needles are in, and most patients forget they are there.

Acupuncture is so relaxing that many of our patients take a short, restorative nap during their treatment.

How soon after my treatment will I experience benefits and results?

Most patients feel relaxed and calm right away. This is a good sign that the central nervous system has responded to the release of feel good hormones from the brain and body. Some patients notice changes to physical and mental/emotional well-being immediately, while others integrate the treatment 24 to 48 hours afterward.

Our goal at Unity Acupuncture is to address your health concerns with precision and patience, knowing that chronic conditions make take a little longer to treat. Our acupuncturist, Laura will craft a treatment plan for you so that you have confidence in your health and healing path.
